HPA and Motor Trend Team Up For Charity Challenge

HPA Motorsports Inc. is proud to announce its involvement in working with Motor Trend Magazine to build a wild, 400+ hp car for charity. A simple enough exercise right? Not so when you factor in that the entire car has to be assembled from parts available for bid and purchase at ebaymotors.com.

The entire build is part of the Primedia Editors Charity Challenge, involving ten teams from different Primedia publications who have been giving $25,000 to build the best and most desirable car they possibly can from parts available on ebay.com. Ultimately the vehicles will be performance tested and then auctioned off for charity (and, of course, for bragging rights as to which vehicle is the coolest).

The deserving charity is Charity Cars of Longwood, Florida, a non-profit organization devoted to supplying needy, work oriented people with safe reliable automobiles.

John Kiewicz of Motor Trend started this challenge with a rare find on ebaymotors.com, a 2000 Golf GTI with a 4motion conversion already installed for $10,000! Although a bare bones chassis with no engine, this is a terrific start to what will be a budget performer. In addition to the shell, a 2.8L VR6 sporting a 390hp HPA turbo system and 6 speed trans was sourced for the power plant. Other pieces squandered off of ebay include: a custom leather/suede interior, nitrous oxide looking bazooka subwoofer, a Euro-spec R32 body kit, and a KW coil-over suspension system.

Looking over the parts list and watching the car get assembled in the HPA shop has left me to believe that the other teams involved in the challenge should be pretty worried, because this car is together, it’s going to haul. But then again this isn’t a personal competition…it’s for charity. Yea, right.
