Q: How long have you owned this car?
A: I have owned this car for about a year and a half now. I bought it from a guy who had it sitting in his garage for about 6 months. I am the 3rd owner.
Q: Is there anything unique about the history of this car?
A: Nothing out of the ordinary except the guy who owned it before me worked for the South African VW advertising agency in Cape Town.
Q: What was your objective with this car?
A: It was bought to be a daily driver as I had always wanted to own a VR6 and got tired of modifying my Golf 1. It was supposed to stay stock standard – but I guess I was wrong.
Q: What tuning style would you describe this car as?
A: It is kind of based a bit on the German scene with a bit of the Euro in there as well.
Q: Who helped you build this car?
A: Besides the body work, which was done by a body shop, the rest of the work was carried out by myself with a bit of help from the guys on the VWvortex.
Q: What makes your car special?
A: Just that it is something different on the roads, especially where I live, and it gets a lot of looks when I drive by.
Q What is your favorite part/feature/function?
A: My favorite part would have to be the bonnet extension which for me changed the whole look of the front of the car.
Q: Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car?
A: I would have to say a few ideas came from the English magazine called “The Golf,” which I buy every month and also from surfing the web.
Q: What don’t you like about this car?
A: I don’t like the fact that I don’t have a sunroof – other than that I love her to bits.
Q: What would you change if you could?
A: I would like to get hold of a Mk4 interior, as I love those Recaro seats.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project?
A: As I am still in the process of doing a few things to her at the moment, she rates a “6″, but when all is done, she will be a perfect “10″ in my eyes.
Q: What would you do to the car if money were no object?
A: I would love to import the EIP Stage 5 turbo kit and a mechanic to help me install it.
Q: Who has been your biggest critic of this project?
A: I would say my dad would fall into that category, as he is always saying. “What have you gone and bought now…?”
Q: What do your family and friends say about this car?
A: All my friends love my car and sometimes I am referred to as, “Greg – you know, the one with the white VR6.”
Q: What is your favorite place to drive this car?
A: Along the coast with the windows down, looking over the ocean, and going on breakfast runs with the other GTi guys.
Q: What is your ideal day with this car?
A: To just be on the open road and cruising and listening to the music.
Q: Who gets to drive this car?
A: Well, besides me I would say only my mom. I am very fussy about who drives my car..
Q: If your car had a motto, what would it be?
A: “Is this going to hurt?”
Q: If you had to name your car, what would you name it?
Q: What was your previous project?
A: It was a Golf 1 which started life out as a 75kw carbureted 1800 and ended up being a 110kw fuel injected street racer, bored out to a 1900 with full rollcage, racing seats the works. It took me four years to build up.
Q: What is your next project?
A: I am hoping there will not be a next project, as once I have finished the VR6 I would just like to keep her and maybe just change things on her as I get tired of them.
