How long have you owned this car? I bought it from my Aunt in May of 2000, but I moved to California in July so I didn’t get to drive it until then. But I had driven it during the summer of 1999 a few times.

Is there anything unique about the history of this car? At the time I was looking for a 72 Super Beetle, but when my aunt told me she would be selling her car I decided I had to have it !!! I am the 5th owner; the original owner sold it in 1984 to the 2nd owner, who lived in La Mirada,CA. He drove a lot (like 60 miles each way to work) and he put over 450,000 miles on the car. He sold it to a student that moved it to the San Francisco bay area who sold it 6 months later to my aunt. She kept it for about a year and sold it to me. It had 573,000 miles on it then, it now has 732,000 miles!

Why did you choose this car to purchase? When I found out my Aunt was selling it I had to have it.

What other cars did you consider? A few other bugs, but mostly a 72 Super Beetle painted aqua green with new black headliner.

What was your objective with this car? Bring it back to full stock, it was my first air-cooled restoration and the car I learned most of everything on, it was my first car and still is my daily driver to this day, I wanted also to bring it to Euro specs as I almost bought a 72 Super in Tahiti (which has Euro specs), basically it had to appear stock but have features that would match or exceed today’s standards.

What tuning style would you describe this car as? Stock, Euro, OEM Plus

Who helped you build this car? My wife, also got help from my Uncle Kelly, my Cousin Guylou, my friend Tim from Germanair, my friend Sevy Price, and more friends

What makes your car special? I love it, it’s my baby

What is your favorite part/feature/function? The whole car; the way it sounds, the way it drives, the smell, the looks and thumbs up I get when I drive it. I just love it.

Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? A lot of ideas came from my Cousin Guylou, and the rest were personal decisions.

What don’t you like about this car? It started rusting after I moved to Florida.

What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? Money, as always, that is why it is still an ongoing project after 6 years

How did you overcome the issue? I would restore other bugs and put the money into this one

What would you change if you could? Nothing, but I would do another (3rd) full restoration on it if I had the money, and maybe repaint it stock color (Shantung Yellow, L12D)

On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? 9, always room for improvement, always

What would you do to the car if money were no object? Full ground up restoration … again, with top quality paint !

Who has been your biggest critic of this project? Myself and my Cousin Guylou

What do your family and friends say about this car? They like it but think I spend too much time and money in it

What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? Most memorable is definitely my wedding, on December 28th 2002, but otherwise every moment spent with this car is memorable, every single one of it

Has this car competed in any events? Yes several times

Results? A lot of 1st place trophies, some 2nd place and a 3rd place, it competed at events such as Sacramento Bugorama, Mother Lode Show & Swap, Bob Baker VW Spring Festival in Carlsbad California, Peninsula Automotive’s VW Jam, VW Spring Fling in Madera California, Lagoon Island in San Rafael California, VWs in V-Town in Vallejo California, Pasco Bug Jam in Dade City Florida, Orlando Spring Show N Shine, VW Classic 2002 and much more ….

What is your favorite place to drive this car? EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME

What is your ideal day with this car? Any day

Who gets to drive this car? My wife and I and that’s it 😀

If your car had a motto, what would it be? Beware of that stock bug … or is it stock ?

If you had to name your car, what would you name it? It has a name : Choupinette

What was your previous project? None before that unless if you count my Dad’s 1.1L 93 Renault Clio I turned into a Williams Renault Clio wannabe and when I helped my Uncle rebuilt his Jeep

What is your next project? Not sure yet

Engine Modifications-1776cc (90.5mm Forged Mahle pistons), DMS 69mm Counterweighed crank with 8 dowels, Chromoly pushrods, chromoly studs, 30mm oil pump, full flow with HP1 filter, high capacity oil cooler with fan, windage pushrod tube, Web Cam, Scat Ratio Rockers, and much more, and soon a Low Bugget (AJ Sims) “1600T” under the decklid Turbo kit

Exhaust Modifications- Right now S&S header with single S&S Quietpack, soon turbo so no real exhaust

Transmission Modifications- I have both the stock transmission and a Freeway flyer with 3.88 R&P and 0.82 4th, I can change whenever I want 😀 After I get the turbo I will start saving for a new transmission with super diff, welded 3rd and 4th, 4.12 (or 3.88) Ring and Pinion, 0.82 4th, HD side plate and axles ….

Suspension Modifications- European front springs (2”-2.5” lower than US versions), KYB GR-2 front struts and rear shocks (may be replaced by white KYBs in the rear soon) Bugpack 7/8” front and 3/4” rear sway bars

Brake Modifications- European front disc brakes

Wheels and Tires- Stock wheels, 4.5X15 front with 165/80/15 tires, 5.5X15 rear with 165/80/15 (will be replaced by 205/65/15 when Turbo is installed)

Exterior/Body Modifications- Euro headlights, Euro badging and that’s it

Interior Modifications- MexiBeetle VW rear parcel tray with access door and speaker holes and VW emblem, Gray tweed/black vinyl seats, 3 point front seat belts (will be replaces by 5 points harnesses after turbo) and 2 point rear seat belts

Audio/Video/I.C.E.- Sony Minidisc deck, Sony 10 CD/MP3 changer, Pioneer 300 Watts RMS amp, 2 Pioneer 450 watts subs mounted in rear parcel tray, 2 Pioneer 6.5” speakers mounted in speaker brackets below dash on kick panels
