How long have you owned this car? I’ve owned this car since June 5, 2004. However, a good friend owned the car previously from 98-01’(John) then sold it to another good friend (Mike) whom I purchased it from. I’m glad I knew where I could find it.
Is there anything unique about the history of this car? This car has a few parts directly from a couple of “VW Sport’s” project cars. Namely the P-zwo Mirrors, and the BBS RS2’s. They are 2 of my favorite things in the car.
Why did you choose this car to purchase? I wanted it since John owned it but never was able to get my hands on it. When the opportunity arose, I couldn’t pass it up.
What other cars did you consider? Well, I got rid of a 1992 Corrado VR6 in very good condition for this car. However, there wasn’t another car that I wanted to have.
What was your objective with this car? To build upon what was already there. I wanted to give the car more power. Power is where this car was always lacking.
What tuning style would you describe this car as? I would have to say that its OEMplus but with Euro touches.
Who helped you build this car? My good friend John P. built this car’s first incarnation. Fortunately I was there for much of it. I actually got to help build my future car. Then Mike got a hold of it and put my old Euro bumpers on and changed the lamps up. From there, a few friends, my wife, and myself installed the VR6. I got some needed advice from Derek at Exklusiv while I was gathering parts. So I guess you could say that it was a conglomeration of people!!!
What makes your car special? First, it’s the color. This color (Bright Surf Green) is pretty limited. Second, it has a VR6 in it now, but was a 2.0. Third, the wheels are pretty rare from what I’m told.
What is your favorite part/feature/function? I love the color and the engine. The color makes most people turn and look, add to that the VR6 growl and you’ve got a real attention grabber.
Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? My friend John did much of the exterior styling on the car. I was there for some of it as stated previously, and he took some input from me. Lucky, we both have the same styling likes and dislikes.
What don’t you like about this car? I don’t like a few small body problems and the paint on the roof and front bumper is wacky.
What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? My biggest obstacle would have to have been time/money. I was a full-time student who also worked. So time isn’t easy to come by. Also, being a student means money isn’t easy to come by either. Luckily my wife is super cool about me spending what little money I have, on the car and not her.
How did you overcome the issue? Er… Can’t talk about that.
What would you change if you could? I would change only a few things. I would install cruise and put some coilovers on it.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? I would say that it would be an 8.5.
What would you do to the car if money were no object? If money were no object, I would add a Kinetic Motorsport turbo kit and PWR air-to-water intercooler. I would treat the car to a full respray in Bright Surf Green. Finally, I would add a Quaife LSD and gearset to it.
Who has been your biggest critic of this project? That would have to be my friend Johnny. He was soooo mad when I got rid of my built Jazz Blue Rabbit GTI. So now any car I have isn’t good enough.
What do your family and friends say about this car? My family says its cool, my wife says I spend too much time and money on it, my friends really like it since they’re all VW people too.
What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? Since I’ve only owned the car less than a year, memories are a bit scarce. However, during my swap it took me 5 days to completely get the engine in, running, and buttoned up. The embarrassing part was that I couldn’t get the instrument cluster to work. Took me 3 days to figure out that I hadn’t plugged in a harness to the fuse box. That was embarrassing.
Has this car competed in any events? Since I’ve owned it, it has been to a local track a few times. I also took 1st place at the Phoenix Bug O Rama #31.
What is your favorite place to drive this car? My favorite place to drive this car is any of the numerous long and twisty roads here in Arizona. Getting out there and opening it up is like therapy.
What is your ideal day with this car? My ideal day would be to wake up early, wash and wax it, go to a sweet Tucson VW BBQ, follow that up with a drive up Kitt Peak, and back to Chili’s for some beers.
Who gets to drive this car? My wife is the only one that gets to drive it regularly. I’m pretty sure that only 2 people have driven it but me since the VR6 swap.
If your car had a motto, what would it be? I hadn’t thought about that. I guess it would be “Green with envy??”
If you had to name your car, what would you name it? I would have to name it “Turtle”. John, the previous owner, called it that since it was so slow with the 2.0. I would have to stick with that.
What was your previous project? This is my 13th water-cooled VW. My most recent ones have been a ’95 Jetta GL, a ’96 GTI VR6, an ’84 Rabbit, and a ’92 Corrado VR6,
What is your next project? I may get into a 4 door A3 golf for a daily, however I’ve owned a few A2’s and that direction is looking pretty good too. Only time will tell. I do plan on keeping this car for a while though.
