How long have you owned this car?
Is there anything unique about the history of this car?
It was raced out of Georgia as an SCCA ITC car before I got it.
What drew you to this specific car?
I have always loved the look of the Mk1 Scirocco and it is a competitive package in H Production where I wanted to race.
What other cars did you consider?
First generation Honda Civic CRX.
What was your objective with this car?
To build a clean, solid base that I could easily upgrade moving forward.
What tuning style would you describe this car as?
Who helped you build this car?
My son Theo was there to help hold things and do what he could. I got a lot of support and real information from the whole SCCA VW racing community. As a newbe to VWs, no question was too dumb for an answer.
What makes your car special?
I tried to keep the look as stock as possible from a distance but as modified as the rules allow.
What is your favorite part/feature/function?
I think that my CIS system installation worked our very well, it get lots of compliments.
Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car?
I took lots of photos of all the other Sciroccos and Rabbits racing at the SCCA Runoffs and pulled the best features that I liked from all of them.
What don’t you like about this car?
I kept part of the original cage and now wish that I started from scratch. An maybe the rusted out driver’s floor.
What was your biggest obstacle in building this car?
My learning curve on Mk1 VWs.
How did you overcome the issue?
The Bentley manual, Greg Raven’s book and all of my VW racing friends.
What would you change if you could?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project?
What would you do to the car if money were no object?
Gee, a new engine to the max of the rules, VW Motorsport gearbox and diff and some very expensive shocks.
Who has been your biggest critic of this project?
What do your family and friends say about this car?
They are amazed at what came out of our garage.
What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car?
Memorable would be the first time on track testing after a 5 year build and most embarrassing would be loading it on the trailer for the first time and smashing the spoiler with a ramp.
What is your favorite story about this car?
Having gearbox trouble in the warm up before Nelson Ledges and my friends Ted and Chris encouraging me to fuel up and take the start which we went on to win.
Has this car competed in any events?
Three seasons of SCCA National racing since building it into an H Production car.
What is your favorite place to drive this car?
Beaverun seems to suit it very well.
What is your ideal day with this car?
Any day at the race track with friends and fair weather.
Who gets to drive this car?
If your car had a motto, what would it be?
Let’s go! It has finished every race that it has started.
If you had to name your car, what would you name it?
I never give my cars names.
What was your previous project?
I built and raced a real Mini Cooper S for many years.
What is your next project?
A race car is never finished, but I have always like 914s.
What one word best describes your car?
Any regrets? Tell us about it.
That it took me so long to get into racing VWs.

It’s a ton of fun to drive hard and race close with other cars.

Color (Include original if applicable)- Most of the original deep red paint has been stripped off and I panted it an orange that is close to Audi TT Papaya Orange.
Engine Modifications- Match port head, Web cam, VW Motorsport fuel distributor, European GTI Distributor, +.040 pistons, raised compression ratio.
Exhaust Modifications- 4 into 1 header, mandrel bent pipe, Dyno Max resonator.
Transmission Modifications- Lightened flywheel, LSD, taller 2nd gear in a GTI H2 box.
Suspension Modifications- Carrera struts, Eibock springs, camber plates, Delrin bushings, ball joint spacer, tierods flipped under steering arms, two sway bars on the back.
Brake Modifications- Carbotech pads, ducting in the front, Willwood bias adjuster.
Wheels and Tires- BBS 6 x 13 with Hoosier racing slicks.
Exterior/Body Modifications- Lexan windshield and windows, GTI flares, fiberglass hood and hatch.
Interior Modifications- Stripped out, all insulation and undercoating removed, full welded cage, 6-point belts, Kirkey race seat
