- Beijing Auto Show 2014 – Volkswagen R 400 Study
The Beijing International Auto Exhibition is quickly becoming one of the world’s largest events, and the Volkswagen Auto Group took the opportunity to roll out a few concepts and production models. Here is a quick rundown of the major introductions, and be sure to check out the gallery at the bottom of the page for more images.
R 400 Study
The R 400 Study utilizes a 400 PS (395hp) version of the EA888 2.0T capable of taking the car from 0-100kph in 3.9 seconds. Other differences from seventh generation Golf models include more aggressively flared fenders (an additional 20mm per side) to accommodate for a widened track and new 19 inch wheels, a motorsports-themed interior with alcantara and leather race seats, a new rear diffuser and side sills as well as a host of other small detail changes.
Midsize Coupe Concept
Volkswagen’s Midsize Coupe Concept is a preview of a Chinese-market specific model which will be about the same size as a Jetta, but wider and lower. While we aren’t sure how closely the production model will look compared to this concept, it is based on the MQB platform, meaning that it could be introduced into other markets at some point without extreme investment. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
Volkswagen pulled the wraps off of their face-lifted Touareg in Beijing, which proved to be a mild refresh with relatively minor changes. These changes include updated front and rear styling, Bi-xenon headlights as standard, new interior colors and trim, new exterior colors and new R-Line packages. Expect to see the updated Touareg at dealers late this year.
Seat Leon Cupra
Volkswagen’s Spanish brand Seat showed off it’s 280hp Leon Cupra in Beijing, featuring Dynamic Chassis Control and offering all 350nm (258ft-lbs) of torque from 1700rpm. The model is now Seat’s highest powered offering, making the sprint from 0-100kph in just 5.7 seconds while returning consumption of 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers (36.75mpg) when equipped with a DSG transmission.
Audi TT Offroad Concept
Featuring styling derived from the TT line, with the utility of a small SUV, Audi’s TT Offroad Concept made waves in Beijing. The concept is powered by a combination of gasoline and electric power propelling the vehicle to 100kph in just 5.2 seconds with consumption at an extremely low 1.9 liters per 100 kilometers (123.797 mpg). As a purely electric vehicle, the TT Offroad Concept has a range of 50 Kilometers (31 miles).
Bugatti Veyron “Black Bess”
Bugatti rolled out their 5th “Les Légendes de Bugatti” special edition model- the “Black Bess.” This edition is based on the Grand Vitesse, and pays homage to a famous Type 18 with black paint and real 24 karat gold accents. Inside, it features beige and brown leather, with the original Type 18 illustrated in the door panel. The “Black Bess” carries a price tag of roughly $3.45 Million.
