It’s a sad day for Volkswagen Motorsport, as Jost Capito, director of motorsport at VW, under whose leadership they have dominated the World Rally Championship, has finally set a date for his departure, reports motorsport.com.

Capito’s move to McLaren has been known of since January, but until now no date had been set for his actual departure from VW. The delay came as a result of an agreement that he would find a suitable replacement before leaving.

The silver lining, of course, is that the implication is that Capito has found a replacement he feels will be as good as he was.

Still, though, Capito has taken Volkswagen Motorsport to 37 rally victories since 2013 and three World Rally Championships, so he leaves big shoes to fill.

Capito will move onto the struggling McLaren F1 team in August or September.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
