Electrodyne: Freedom Design Cold Air Intake

The OE air filter housing has two main purposes. Besides simply housing the air filter, it is also designed to quiet the engine by muffling the intake system. The engine is forced to pull air through a very small, crimped tube, restricting the air flow and power.

Replacing the air filter housing with a free-flowing open element air filter removes a large restriction, but heat becomes an issue. Hot air is less dense and does not burn as efficiently as cool air. Hot air can actually cause a loss of power even with the restrictive air filter housing removed.

Typical Cold Air Intakes solve both problems very well. The downside to typical Cold Air Intakes is filter placement. A filter mounted low to the ground is always in danger of water ingestion. No matter who wants to deny the risks, water ingestion has happened and will continue to happen with Cold Air Intakes. Just because it hasn’t happened to you or your friend, doesn’t mean it won’t. Some people feel the performance gain is worth the risk, we disagree.

The Freedom Design Cold Air Intake with Integrated Heat Shield is the best of both worlds. The air filter housing is replaced with a high polished intake tube that extends to the battery box. The free-flowing air filter is mounted just behind the headlight, where fresh air is fed to it via the OE forced air path. Air is channeled behind the headlight and directed to the filter. A composite heat shield is used to further block heat from reaching the filter. Rather than using a separate mini filter for the smog pump, it draws air through the main filter just like the OE setup.

Different versions are available depending on model year and engine type. The early model versions are for cars with big-top, flip open battery boxes. The late model versions are for cars with small-top, lift-up battery boxes.
