HPA Motorsports and Steve Goldin Racing fielded their two car team with Tristan Herbert piloting Car 33 and Jan Heylen piloting Car 43 at Miller Motorsport Park this past weekend for an exciting three race event.
Coming off a successful debut in Florida in March, HPA had to recalibrate both 2012 Jettas to run at altitude and conform to the tight constraints imposed by the World Challenge officials.
Jan Heylen, a veteran VW driver, kicked off the weekend behind the wheel of Car 43 by capturing the pole for Race One and setting the fastest lap time of the weekend. Race One saw Jan locked in a vicious battle for the lead, holding off the Mazda of Cooper for nearly half the race until a valve train failure ended his weekend prematurely; handing the lead, and eventually the podium over to the Mazda.
Tristan Herbert piloted Car 33 which had a challenging start to the weekend. In the first practice session, an oiling issue resulted in the engine throwing a rod. To the surprise of the team, a die hard VW enthusiast who caught wind of the devastating failure drove his showroom stock 2012 New Beetle 12 hours from LA to Utah to donate its heart for the weekend.
The RennGruppe team worked through the night to ready the car for Sunday’s competition where Tristan Herbert offered up a sensational race. Starting from the back of the field, Tristan calmly and precisely picked off each entry until he found himself behind the leading Mazda of Cooper with 15 minutes to go. His cool approach to the first half of the race saved the car and he was able to pass and pull away from the Mazda which seemed to have burned up its equipment, later falling to both Compass 360 Hondas.
Not only did Tristan pilot the HPA Jetta to a first place victory, he made a clean sweep of the event collecting the Hard Charger award, the Optima Battery Clean Pass of the race award and the Best Standing Start award.
Moving forward in preparation for next week’s race in Monterey, it’s clear that once both Jettas pair up on the course, there should be some exciting challenges for the lead to be seen.
“The KW Suspensions coliover contributed to both Jettas owning the fastest laps of their respective races and both our drivers, simply put, Got ‘er Done,” according to the HPA crew.
The tuned DSG continues to prove itself as the transmission of choice for competitive racing and the new 2.0TSi is built to win races.
