You may remember reading about the E-Bay Motors Primedia Editors Charity Challenge in your favorite car magazine, or here on VW Vortex. Well the competition has ended, and thanks to your votes, the Motor Trend team’s entry, a 2000 Volkswagen Golf “Project R28” was awarded; “Best Bang for the Buck/Best Value”, “Best in Style/Cool Factor”, “Best in Form and Function/Drivability”, “Best Car”, and the “Best Overall” honors. Full details of the teams, cars, and charity can be read online at http://www.editorscharitychallenge.com/.
The R28 Features: 2001 12v VR6 engine, complete 4-motion drive train, Garrett GT30R Ball Bearing Turbo with custom housings, R32 Body Kit, and R32 brakes, KW Variant 2 Coilover Suspension, 18” RH Wheels, Alcantara Interior, and much more.
The 425 hp R28 completed the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds, and 0-60 mph in only 3.8 seconds… those are Porsche GT2 numbers!
Through some fancy buying on E-Bay, long late nights at HPA and horse-trading of parts, this car was built within the $25,000 budget. However, if you tried to build the same car using new parts and paid for labor, it would set you back over $60K. From May 13 through 22nd, you can bid on this fabulous car through E-Bay Motors. Save yourself the extra cost by bidding for the car on E-Bay and support a good cause in the process.
All 10 competing vehicles (including Motor Trend’s HPA Motorsports’ built R28) are now up for sale on E-Bay and proceeds are going to a very worthwhile charity: non-profit organization, Charity Cars (http://www.800charitycars.org/). Charity Cars, Inc. is the first and only national charity that provides refurbished donated vehicles to struggling families. Established in 1996, Charity Cars is the first of its kind in the nation, providing a vehicle that has been refurbished and redone to ensure safety and reliability, a license plate, the down payment for insurance, an emergency roadside assistance membership, a service warranty and case management services to families wiling to work. Is there anything they don’t do? This amazing organization is made up of dedicated and caring people who in effect, change the lives of deserving families in our communities.
As the winner of the auction, you will get to hang with the crew of Motor Trend for a day in Los Angeles, where you’ll learn the ropes of track testing, have the opportunity to track test your new R28, and get a nifty Motor Trend shirt and jacket. You’ll also participate in a private day of instruction alongside Motor Trend staffers as you further hone your vehicle control skills at the new Bondurant Driving School.
