July 1, 2004 marked the beginning of the 25th year in business for PG Performance, founded by German national, Paul Gerkrath. PG Performance opened it’s doors in 1980 as a full service garage specializing in Volkswagen and Audi’s, doing everything from general maintenance to high performance engine building.
The founder of PG Performance has a very colourful history of building powerful european cars. He recalls some of his unique accomplishments including “taking a 1.5L block, which was all we had back in 1979, and giving it 2.0L of displacement”, and adapting the first ever Corrado VR6 engine into MK2 chassis (in sublet for another local VW shop). One of the more recent conversions completed at PG Performance involved transplanting a 2003 European 130HP TDI “PD” motor into a Mk 3 Golf, including seamless integration of the MK4 gauge cluster and chassis electronics.
As customers began looking for that special European “something” to set their car apart, PG Performance began to import hard to find parts and accessories from Germany. This small niche business has evolved into a family business as Paul Jr. has come on board and headed up the parts and accessories side. PG Performance is now the Official Canadian Distributor for Abt Sportsline and Hella European Lighting. They import monthly shipments from Germany full of goodies from JOM, Kamei, Valeo, OEM European spec parts and accessories, and many more. Today, they import a wide variety of popular and unique European parts, and ship out daily to customers across North America and beyond.
“The body styling parts produced by Abt Sportsline are very high quality and have a superior fit and finish to many other products I have seen over the years” enthuses Paul Sr. “I took and original VW R32 body kit off my car in favour the Abt Sportsline body kit!”
The PG Performance team are also experts when it comes to automotive lighting, and have been fitting European spec headlights, high wattage bulb conversions, fog and driving lights, etc, to their customers’ cars for decades, and have been importing OEM Xenon H.I.D. headlights since their inception.
“One thing in particular we have been well known for is installing relays (to accommodate high wattage light bulbs) inside the headlight housings for an ultra clean, waterproof, finished product” says Paul Jr. “We don’t like to sell inferior product and don’t carry any brands we don’t trust and want on our own cars. We are working directly with Hella North America to import European spec lighting into Canada so we are able to be very competitive with this high quality product line”. Among the latest of products available from Hella are the Golf 4-Look Celis “Angel Eye” Headlights for Mk3 Golf.
PG Performance has recently become the newest Canadian dealer for REVO Technic performance software. This new evolution of engine management tuning makes it possible to upgrade the program on your vehicle’s ECU without having to solder in a new chip, and gives the driver the ability to choose between several different programs with the use of a Serial Port Switch.
What does the future hold for PG Performance? They have plans to expand their physical store into a larger and more modern facility, and are currently working on a new website which will allow customers to get more in depth product information, and order on-line. Their attention to detail and customer service should spell out a bright outlook for this long standing establishment to the west-coast VW/Audi scene.
In celebration of their upcoming 25th Anniversary, there will be several great promotions and events over the next year. Keep watching their website: www.pgperformance.com for details.
To kick off their 25th Anniversary, PG Performance is having a “Back to (Driving!) School” sale until September 15th featuring 15% off all Abt Sportsline Body Styling and Accessories, Hella European Lighting, Kamei, H&R, and JOM Car Parts.
