What is an engine mount?
Most modern vehicles use 3-4 engine mounts to secure the motor and transmission to the chassis. The designs of the engine mounts are vital in determining the dynamics of motor movement under live conditions.
What is the VW type 4 chassis?
Volkswagen and Audi share many design principals and engines across their platforms. One such chassis is the Type-4 which is known as the Golf 4, also homogenous with the Jetta 4, Beetle, Bora, Audi TT, A3. Type 4’s use the same 3 engine mounts: Engine side, Transmission side and Lower pendulum mount.

The VW factory engine and transmission side engine mount connects the engine and gearbox to the chassis and were designed as soft flexible mounts, to provide a very comfortable drive. A drawback is the high amount of engine movement under torque load and on hard acceleration. This engine “slop” greatly decreases stability and smoothness under high performance driving conditions and rapid gear selection.
The VW factory transmission side mount is constructed from a die-cast alumuminium mount which en-cases two soft rubber bushes in a ‘clam-shell’ style cast aluminium housing and a pressed in stamped steel base plate. The 2-piece OEM rubber bush does not completely fill the pocket inside the mount casing. The factory engine side mount is constructed from a die-cast alumuminium mount which houses a large soft rubber bushes with a vulcanised cast strut. The rubber bush contains a viscous oil cavity to absorb shock. The 1-piece OEM rubber bush does not completely fill the pocket inside the mount casing.
The drawback of the OEM designs for ‘performance minded’ drivers is that long term stresses from power enhanced engines tends to cause premature wear of the both the driver and passenger side engine mounts: which either leak their viscous dampner becoming very sloppy, the rubber breaks down, or the vulcanized joint separates or the aluminium casing cracks completely.
VF-Engineering designed, tooled up and manufactured a complete new replacement, containing specially desinged molded high durometer polyurethane bushes. The mount is constructed from billet (ingot) aluminum and supplied with high tensile hardware. Billet is physically twice as strong as cast and this mount is designed for strength. Fitting should take no more than 60 minutes each and fits all MK4 chassis including Golf, Jetta, Bora, Beetle, Audi TT, A3, S3
These high performance mounts have been tested on a 350hp VF supercharged R32 and an APR stage3 1.8T. VF found it provides a dramatic difference in the stability of the car when accelerating and braking hard. Gear changing under hard acceleration is also greatly enhanced. You will notice the difference.
