Volkswagen just announced that they broke the Nürburgring FWD lap record, so clearly the Golf has that segment of the automotive world mastered. What about the RWD segment?
Well, feast your eyes on this mid-engine, RWD 1991 Golf GTI that's for sale on the forum . It has a recently rebuilt 3.0L turbocharged VR6 engine where the back seats should be and it sends its power to the back wheels.
Long time readers may recognize this mid-engine Mk2, because it has popped up on the forum more than once over the years. It’s so famous, in fact, that the seller, 6vdubbin9, calls it a piece of VAG history.
It was originally created by Momentum Tuning and since then it’s passed through a couple of owners, the paint has changed from red to black, and a few other modern touches have been added.
Since buying the RWD GTI in 2014, the current owner says he’s gone over it with a fine tooth comb. It’s been gutted, stripped, rebuilt, and rewired to make it run like it ought to. Fast.
According to 6vdubbin9 the car isn’t just a burnout machine, though, it really wants to move. “This hooks and goes in every gear,” he says. “I’ve forced 1 st gear to break loose at 20 psi by clutch kicking. But it just wants to go.”
As a result it’s pretty quick and the mid-engine layout makes handling it a dream. “The balance through the turns is absolutely mind blowing. Picture driving a really, really pissed off go kart,” says 6vdubbin9.
Among the many, many mods are JE pistons and rods, titanium valve springs, an o2a VR6 transmission with Peliquin diff and much more. The exterior has also recently been modernized. It now sports BBS RS 3-piece wheels, Datsun ZG flares, shaved emblems and more.
6vdubbin9 is asking $20,000 for this mid-engine Mk2, which resides in New York state. It sounds like the price is negotiable, though, since he seems more interested in finding someone who’ll treat the car well than he is in making a quick buck.
