After his conscious uncoupling from Ferrari in 2014, Audi jumped on the opportunity to snatch up Stefano Domenicali and put him charge of Lamborghini. The former F1 team principal says, though, that Formula 1 isn’t in the cards for Lambo.

I have to say this is not the priority today, because we have other priorities above this,” Domenicali told Italy’s Autosprint. “However you cannot think of a brand like Lamborghini without motorsport.”

To fill that need, Lamborghinis currently race in, among others, the international Blancpain racing series. “[We] have a system that is working really well in racing, and credit for that foes to all of the people who have chosen the sports program very well,” says Domenicali.

That’s not to say, though, that Domenicali didn’t enjoy his time in Formula 1.

“If I look at my experience in F1, for me it was an extraordinary period that I carry inside me that is absolutely unforgettable,” says Domenicali. “I never fail to thank those who trusted me in the past. But this is part of my life now. Today, we are focused on a new challenge that I have to say is just as inspiring and beautiful, but in a different dimension.”
