They call it the ‘Green Hell’ but if hell is fiery then Nurburgring is no Hades. For 2013, the Green Hell was doused with so much rain that the race was red flagged… stopped for over nine hours.

Minus the red flag period, 15 hours were not easy on those cars in the mix. A heavy mix of water, oil and mud on the track made for seriously complicated conditions. No less than three of the factory-developed R8 LMS competitors had their race end following an accident. Many more competitors followed suit.

As far as factory efforts go, entries were limited to the aforementioned Audi R8s and the wide body TT RS models on the grid – all part of the ever-growing Audi Sport customer racing division run by quattro GmbH.

This year saw no factory-backed Volkswagen efforts at the Nurburgring. Volkswagen Motorsport’s main effort this year is the fledgling WRC program and also the Scirocco cup. Even still, several Scirocco GT24s, former Volkswagen factory entries, were fielded this year by independent teams. The usual range of generations of Golfs that seemed to be a Nurburgring tradition gave way to just two Golf 5s this year. Mixed with a trio of Sciroccos, this all made for a lighter Volkswagen contingent than in previous years.

Class Summary: Victory at Nurburgring proved much more difficult in 2013. Audi’s best finish overall was the 5th place (also 5th in class) with the returning victor #1 Audi R8 LMS ultra. The three Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and a lone BMW Z4 managed dominance this year, but in the end only one lap separated the Audi R8 LMS #1 from first place.

Varying problems caused the remaining R8s to finish in positions further back though the Phoenix-managed #4 also led the race for a period of time.

DNF) #74 Dupre Motorsport Audi RS 5, 45

Class Summary: This marked the first year for Team Christoph Dupre’s Audi RS 5 at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. As part of the SP8 class, the lone Audi in SP8 had the chips stacked heavily against it from the start as it lined up against factory-backed class rivals from the likes of Aston Martin and Lexus.

Alas, the lone RS 5 did not finish the race. Even still, 45 laps was still an impressive run. The last car that did finish only managed 46 laps.

3) #104 Ford Focus, 67
4) #112 pro Handicap e.V. Audi TTS, 61

Class Summary: But for a lone Ford Focus, you could have renamed the SP4T class as the TT class. The SP4T grid was just four cars this year, so a podium spot was guaranteed for nearly everyone providing they finished the race. Unfortunately, the Focus did manage third place, otherwise the field of TTs would have made for an Audi shutout of the SP4T podium.

Class Summary: But for a lone factory-backed Subaru Impreza GVB sedan, the hard fought SP3T class was made up entirely of Volkswagen Group product from Audi, Volkswagen and SEAT.

One of the most interesting cars in this particular group and even the entire race was the #111 Raeder Motorsport Audi TT RS 2.0. Essentially the car used the same lightened widebody TT chassis as the factory-developed front-wheel drive TT RS racecars, but was fitted with a smaller displacement 2.0 TFSI engine. The car managed to beat out the factory Subaru by a mere 54.894 seconds, finished just one lap behind its 5-cylinder SP4T twin fielded by Besaplest and two laps behind the Audi race experience R8 LMS ultra. Overall, the car finished in an impressive 25th position.

The MSC Sinzig #118 TT made the second part of an Audi sandwich around that factory Subaru on the SP3T class podium. The top Volkswagen in the class was the #102 Gotz Motorsport Scirocco GT24 that finished in 5th behind a SEAT Leon SuperCopa.
