Volkswagen de Mexico just published this classic Caribe (read: Mk1 Golf) commercial on their YouTube page, and holy crow is it frenetic.

Commercials have to get your attention, get you excited, and make you want to buy something in just 30 seconds, so they can be pretty assertive, but few ads these days are as exhausting as this Mexican Mk1 Golf ad from 1979.

I’m not sure if there’s a plot here, or even if there’s supposed to be. The ad is mostly shots of the same Golf in the factory and on the road jumping over crests and being turned upside down by a giant rotisserie (what information I'm supposed to glean from such a test is beyond me, but I'm sure glad Volkswagen was thorough).

The thirty second clip has more cuts than the entirety of the film Psycho, which, along with the driving music, give the ad a real sense of speed. I felt like I was watching that ad for Gabbo , from the Simpsons and I feel pretty much the same way Springfield did after it came on: I’m not sure what’s going on, but boy do I want whatever they’re selling.
