Volkswagen is making its pickup even more pickup-y, by adding the latest generation of 3.0L V6 turbodiesel to the lineup. The new engine, they say, will add power and give drivers more torque lower down in the rev range.

The new engine is rated at about 220 hp and 400 lb/ft of torque, but it produces maximum torque at only 1,500 rpm.

This V6 Amarok will be offered with traditional rear wheel drive, and also two 4MOTION options: a rear wheel drive model with an engageable front axle and manual transmission; or a permanent all-wheel drive system and a Torsen differential putting its power through an 8-speed automatic.

Depending on selected equipment, the Amarok will have a payload capacity of between one and 3.5 tonnes.

Volkswagen says that the truck will boast impressive on- and off-road capability as well as some pretty impressive consumption figures of around 37 mpg.

European buyers can look for the new Amarok as early at the end of September, 2016.
