The EPA has officially announced that the Volkswagen e-Golf has a range of 125 miles, a 50% improvement over the previous model.

That’s thanks to a new lithium ion battery that has an increased capacity of 34.8 kWh, up 30% from the the last e-Golf.

The EPA estimates that the 2017 e-Golf will therefore achieve 126 MPGe in the city and 111 MPGe highway. That’s roughly equivalent to the 2017 BMW i3 and the Chevrolet Bolt and it amounts to an annual fuel cost of just $550, assuming you’re paying 13 cents per kWh.

Thanks to the now standard 7.2 kW on-board charger, the battery can be charged in less than 6 hours at a 240V charging station. Meanwhile, the optional DC Fast Charging can get you to 80% charge in just one hour.

That new battery doesn’t just mean more miles, it means more power, too. Thanks to a new 100 kWh motor, the 2017 e-Golf produces 134 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, which is 19 hp and 15 lb-ft more than the 2016 model. Moreover, all of that torque—and I know you’ve heard this before, but it really does make a difference—is instantly available.

The 2017 e-Golf hits showrooms in the spring and pricing will be announced closer to then.
