Volkswagen’s sponsorship program extends way beyond the realm of motorsport and major professional sports. Since 2009, Volkswagen of America has supported the Junior Masters National Soccer Tournament which brings together some of the best youth soccer teams in the country. This year’s edition was held in Portland, Oregon with a team from San Diego, Ca taking home the trophy.

Portland, Ore., August 8, 2014 – On Wednesday, San Diego Surf was named the 2014 Volkswagen Junior Masters National Champions, after two full days of soccer matches. The team competed against five other U-12 boys division teams who had previously qualified during regional tournaments. This year’s annual tournament took place outside of Portland, Ore., in conjunction with the Major League Soccer All-Star Game.
The final match against the Portland Eastside Timbers was exciting for fans and parents. After a scoreless first half, San Diego Surf placed three goals in the remaining 30 minutes to end the match with a score of 3-0.
“This tournament brought together some of the best teams and players from around the country,” said Melvin Cuellar, San Diego Surf head coach. “The boys adjusted well to the different playing styles of the individual teams and I couldn’t be more proud.”
As the 2014 Volkswagen Junior Masters National Champions, San Diego Surf will have the opportunity to train with MLS players in a tailored clinic. Additionally, the team will have a lunch and strategy session with the players, and have been given autographed Brazuca Balls.
A devoted supporter of American soccer, Volkswagen of America has sponsored many grassroots youth soccer tournaments throughout the United States, and has specifically worked with Junior Masters since 2009. Through these efforts, Volkswagen is providing the nation’s most talented and passionate athletes the premier opportunity to compete and perform at a higher level.
