The 2017 Volkswagen Passat, Golf 4-door, SportWagen, Alltrack, and GTI 4-door have been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 's Top Safety Pick, while the 2017 Jetta has earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

The ratings are the highest offered by the IIHS and are only awarded to cars that earn a "good" rating in frontal impact, side impact, roof strength, and head restraint.

For the Golf models, the rating comes when the cars are equipped with optional Front Assist. The same is true of the Jetta, but its plus rating comes thanks to optional Xenon headlights, while the Passat comes with standard Front Assist.
