It is with great regret that Volkswagen acknowledges news of the cancellation of the 2008 Dakar Rally, which had been due to get underway tomorrow (Saturday). ‘The safety of participants has absolute priority and for this reason Volkswagen completely endorses the decision made by the organiser, ASO, to cancel the event,’ said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, board member with responsibility for technical development at Volkswagen.
Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen added: ‘We fully respect the decision; safety also has absolute priority for us. The cancellation is a great disappointment for every member of the Volkswagen Motorsport team. Everyone was looking forward to starting this peaceful and fair sporting competition.’
ASO today announced the decision to cancel due to significant safety concerns, voiced by the French Government, over the Mauritanian stages.
