- Volkswagen R-Line Beetle Announced in Germany
German magazine Autobild as well as most of the rest of the French daily websites have posted the first photos of the new Golf 7 GTI this morning here in France. This new GTI carries a familiar and evolutionary theme as you can see in the photos. News outlets here in Europe are reporting 220hp with an optional performance package that bumps it to 230hp. Torque is an impressive 258 lb-ft. and 35.6 MPG fuel economy. The new GTI should weigh quite a bit less (upwards of 200lbs. less according to reports) and has a new optional electronically-controlled mechanical locking differential (for the first time a real diff). This new differential helped VW’s front wheel drive Scirocco race cars lap the Nürburgring nearly 8 seconds faster.
Don’t expect to see the new GTI (or Golf 7 either) here in the States till last quarter 2013 or first quarter of calendar year 2014 (a little over a year from now). We’ll have more information and photos live from the show in the next 24 hours.
