VERITAS Software Corporation, the leading storage software provider, today announced that gedas Mexico, a division of Volkswagen’s global IT service provider gedas Group based in Berlin, has boosted application performance three-fold and slashed application transaction time by 92 percent after implementing VERITAS i3(TM) application performance management software in their latest complex SAP R/3 installation.
Global automobile manufacturer Volkswagen tasked gedas Mexico with creating an always-on, utility-class supply chain management and enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation for its growing assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico. In response, gedas developed a highly customized SAP R/3 implementation, linked to Oracle databases, to handle business-critical, around-the-clock production, logistics, billing and warehouse management. As the Volkswagen plant ramped up production, gedas knew it needed to optimize the SAP R/3 applications to meet service level agreements (SLAs) guaranteeing 99.98 percent uptime and sub-second transactions — even during peak periods like critical production planning windows and monthly and yearly accounting closings.
“VERITAS provides the perfect set of products for our needs. We now act more proactively and less reactively to the growing and dynamic needs of our environment,” said Alejandro Cavazos, System Programming manager for gedas Mexico. “With the VERITAS application performance management tools I know we are well prepared to handle any future growth.”
Volkswagen produces nearly 40 automobile model types worldwide, in addition to supporting specialized customer requests and responding to fluctuating demand for certain models. This makes precise production planning inherently complex, especially considering that building a single vehicle requires roughly 5,000 parts, with many arriving at the assembly plant just in time. The VERITAS solution is designed to continuously monitor Volkswagen’s SAP R/3 applications and associated Oracle databases.
Prior to deploying the VERITAS i3, gedas could only produce a list of the top 40 most expensive and resource-intensive transactions. “The top 40 list didn’t tell us why or when problems were occurring. We used to send the information to the maintenance teams and there was not a lot they could do with it,” explained Cavazos. “Now, we not only can view a graphical history of what has gone on and when, we can also see the correlation between the transaction, the user, and the SQL statement — which shows us the root of the problem so we can fix it quickly.”
gedas Mexico realizes significant quantifiable returns from their deployment of VERITAS i3 for SAP that include:
— The SAP R/3 applications run up to three times faster during peak
— Applications transact 92 percent faster — from five people spending a
week on one program to two people taking only a day — enabling staff
to spend more time on proactive application administration and
— Troubleshooting calls after normal working hours dropped from two or
three per night to one or two per month
— gedas Mexico met its stringent SLAs without investing in expensive new
“As part of our utility computing strategy, VERITAS is committed to helping customers optimize their application performance to reduce costs and increase productivity,” said Robert Maness, senior director of product marketing, VERITAS Software. “Complex enterprise applications such as SAP R/3 can benefit from our end-to-end correlation of performance issues, as evidenced by the results gedas Mexico achieved.”
Application Performance Management and Utility Computing
