- New EA288 Volkswagen TDI Engine to Debut in 2015 Golf, Jetta, Passat and Beetle
Volkswagen R GMBH, the division of Volkswagen responsible for all R-Line and “R” models is teasing this image of the new seventh generation Golf R. Set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month, the Golf 7 R model looks (according to the teaser image from GMBH) to feature 300hp based on the new EA888 2.0TFSI motor found in the Audi S3.
The version of the 2.0 TFSI in the new Golf R should be identical to the S3 engine which features pistons with stronger bolts and new rings plus reinforced connecting rods with new mounts to transfer power to the crankshaft. The crankcase has been reinforced at the main bearing seats and the main bearing cover as well. The cylinder head is made of a new lightweight aluminum-silicon alloy for additional high strength and temperature resistance.
Despite its complexity and the high performance, the new 2.0 TFSI weighs just 148 kilograms (326.28 lb) – more than five kilograms (11.02 lb) less than the previous engine.
The latest generation of proactive Haldex AWD coupling will get all that power to the ground. We also expect this generation of Golf R to be roughly 120 lbs. lighter than the last generation Golf VI R. Throw in the new Golf 7 GTI’s already outstanding handling and steering and the new Golf R should be the best R model yet.
We expect official information to be released soon from VW, but until then you can visit Volkswagen R GMBH below for more information…
