How do you become a millionaire racing? Start out a billionaire.

Racing is perhaps the most expensive habit you can pick up, but it’s more addictive than heroin, so finding a fun, cheap series to participate in can save your life. Or provide you with an amusing afternoon.

That’s why VW Fun Cup racing is such a great idea. The endurance racing series started in the UK, but now it’s gaining traction all over Europe.  The whole idea is to make the racing as close and cheap as possible.

To that end, everyone who competes in the series races in specially designed, single seat Beetle. It comes with an 1800cc, 130bhp VW/Audi engine attached to a Sadev sequential gearbox and no modifications are allowed. That makes the racing close, but also manageable, and safe, because the cars are fully race prepped.

You can rent or buy your way into the series, and teams vary in size from 2 to 6 drivers.

The idea was so good that it has since taken off in Belgium, where this past weekend they raced the 25h of Spa, as shown in the video above.

Videos of the race have been making their  way to YouTube over the past couple of days and by jove does it look like fun. Beetles with massive spoilers racing around one of the world’s best tracks. It’s a match made in heaven.
