Sales of Volkswagen's Passat have traditionally been slow in the United States. The model was introduced to the US in 1989, though previous generation Passats have been sold in the US under the Dasher and Quantum names also. In fact, this newest Passat shares more in spirit with those earlier cars than it does with any other US model sharing the Passat name.

Like the Dasher and the Quantum, the fifth generation Passat shares the corporate B-platform with an Audi, unlike the previous third and fourth generation Passats that were built on a platform that shared parts with the corporate A-platform.

Introduced in the fall of 1997, the Passat has enjoyed record-breaking sales continuously since then. It has redefined the mid-sized sedan segment and established itself as a serious contender. The Passat took top honors in the mid-sized sedan category with Consumer Reports in 1999 and would have in 1998 also except for the fact that the newness of its 1.8T engine did not provide enough data for a reliability rating.

This award, combined with several others, has pushed the Passat and Volkswagen as a brand in front of many of the mainstream US car buyers who never would have considered the car before.

The Passat, both sedan and wagon, are technically advanced mid-sized cars, employing innovative technology that includes the B5 chassisí revolutionary new four-link front suspension system that greatly lessens the effects or torque steer. All engine choices feature five-valve per cylinder engine technology. Driver's can control shifting with either a manual 5-speed transmission or a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that features gear-select control. An array of passive safety features includes standard front seat-mounted side impact airbags.

The Passat continues to be a sales success in the Volkswagen camp for obvious reasons. If a buyer is driving-oriented, the Passat offers some pleasure amidst a sea of appliance-like vehicles.
