How long have you owned this car? Since February 26th 1999

Is there anything unique about the history of this car? This car was classified as used due to the multiple dealer transfers during the start of the Beetlemania craze. So, I took delivery of a brand new used car.

Why did you choose this car to purchase? While growing up I was always around Volkswagens. As a child I watched my granddad work on old Beetles and other various air-cooled Volkswagens. I would help him out any chance I could, even if it was just handing him tools. Volkswagens were always there, so when it came time to choose my first car purchase, the New Beetle was the obvious choice for me.

What other cars did you consider? Having many toy New Beetles, Shirts, and other New Beetle related items, the New Beetle was my only consideration.

What was your objective with this car? To start with I knew I wanted it to be custom. I remember looking at pictures of the first ABD Beetle with the TSW Trophy wheels and thinking, “Wow my car has to look that good!”

What tuning style would you describe this car as? Kind of a Retro Techno Race Look

Who helped you build this car? I have done almost all of the work. My cousin did help me out with painting some of the interior parts and my granddad helped me out with the tools I needed.

What makes your car special? Michelangelo had his David, I have my Beetle. It is an expression of who I am.

What is your favorite part/feature/function? I think the reaction I receive from the Herbie stripes make the car 10 times more fun.

Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? The Love Bug of course was the inspiration for the rally stripes, but the rest was just part I thought would work well together.

What don't you like about this car? It is way too slow.

What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? The money.

How did you overcome the issue? 6 years of building it one part at a time.

What would you change if you could? The 2.0 engine.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? 9.5

What would you do to the car if money were no object? I would have the body kit molded in as well a having the car painted the same paint code as the original Herbie with racing stripes and gumballs. Then the ‘everybody’s dream mod’ HPA Stage II Twin Turbo conversion.

Who has been your biggest critic of this project? Myself

What do your family and friends say about this car? Everyone loves it!

What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? The most embarrassing moment happened I was pulling into a parking lot where a local VW meeting was being held. The entrance to the parking lot was right next to the interstate off ramp. As I was making the turn, a car came flying off the ramp. To avoid the car I had to punch the gas into the parking lot. What I did not see was the small bump in the drive way. I pulled in so fast that the front end slammed into the bump and broke the old splitters I had mounted to the front clip. When I mean broke, I mean shot parts across the parking lot….

Has this car competed in any events? It has competed in various VW show all over the southeast.

Results? Almost always 1st place.

What is your favorite place to drive this car? On a mountain road.

What is your ideal day with this car? Start off early in the morning and head to the North Georgia mountains. Have lunch at a German restaurant in Helen, GA, and then hit the mountains.

Who gets to drive this car? Just family and a few close friends.

If your car had a motto, what would it be? Not Cute.

If you had to name your car, what would you name it? It has been named since before the Herbie stripes. For the first year it had a Porsche looking side stripe, at some point during this phase, I named it Freaky Beetle

What was your previous project? None

What is your next project? I have a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 that I am currently restoring and well as an Audi TT 225 Roadster that I am ready to start modifying.

What one word best describes your car? Fun
