VW On Wrong Side of Spectacular World Rallycross Championship Semi Final Share Comments The World Rallycross Championship was in Germany this weekend for the second round of the season. Unfortunately, things ended poorly for team-favorite Johan Kristoffersson when he was bumped out of the lead in what commentator Andrew Coley called the most spectacular semi final-race he’d ever seen. Hockenheim was a relatively important race for Team Volkswagen RX Sweden, since it is the only German stop on the championship’s calendar. Things were going well for Kristoffersson, who finished first in the weekend’s second qualifying heat with a spectacular move on the opening lap. As a result, he started the semi-final race on pole and was leading until a collision popped his tire and left him fighting for his life. Despite that, through heroic effort, he held the pack off until the last lap. It was then that the top three finishers passed him, though, and ultimately he finished fourth. The result kept him out of the final race and he finished the weekend seventh overall, while his teammate, Anton Marklund finished 15th overall. Despite the unfortunate finish, Kristoffersson still got some points out of the weekend and is in fourth in the driver’s championship. There isn’t much time to lick wounds, though, because the teams are already headed to Belgium for round four of the World Rallycross Championship this weekend. Watch the semi-final highlights below.
