Speed Leaps to Victory in Atlantic City

It was a big weekend for Scott Speed and Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, as the former took the top spot in the drivers’ championship and the latter won the manufacturer’s championship.

It was a nearly perfect weekend for Speed, who won both Final races this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, he cruised to victory in his Beetle GRC.

For his teammate Foust, meanwhile, the weekend was much more difficult. Contact in the Final race on Saturday kept him from completing that race, while contact in earlier heats on Sunday meant that the day a grind for him.

With ten cars on such a tight track, there’s bound to be contact, but this was a particularly difficult weekend for some reason,” said Foust. “We’ll move on to the next round and look to bounce back.”

As a result of Foust’s poor weekend and Speed’s great weekend, Foust gives up his first place in the drivers’ standings to the defending champ, Speed. The two are only separated by seven points, though, so there’s still racing to be had. Their nearest competition, Steve Arpin, is another 11 points back.

With only three events left this season, competition between the three drivers will be fierce. It won’t be fierce between teams, though, since Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross has already earned enough points this season to guarantee it its second manufacturers’ title in as many years. VARX becomes only the second team in GRC history to win multiple manufacturers’ titles.

The competition will resume with a double header on September 9th and 10th in Seattle, with the season set to wrap up in Los Angeles a month later.
