VW Ready to Show Off Electric Ice Racer Share Comments Volkswagen is launching a fully-electric ice-racer tomorrow at the GP Ice Race event in Austria. It’s the next in a number of electric entries in motorsport that the company is planning, with that announcement of more electric racing VWs coming last year. The company hasn’t revealed any specs for the TCR-looking electric Golf R concept, but Autocar reports that this one is more race-ready than some of the company’s other electric motorsports entry like the time-trial ID. R. They cite VW Motorsport boss Sven Smeets as calling it “a view of the future.” They also report VW called it “an ambassador for future performance cars for Volkswagen R.” This could get a version of the 671 hp, twin-motor powertrain in the ID. R hillclimber, but it could also be something a little less extreme. Don’t expect it to end up in a roadgoing Golf anytime soon. Or ever. More likely, it could preview something that would end up in an ID 3-based touring car, replacing the Golf-based touring car currently raced. The concept may also share DNA with the Cupra e-Racer, which premiered in 2018. Four motors mounted in the back of the car make up to 670 hp and get it 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds.
