150 VW Employees Chosen Out of Hat to Test ID.3

Volkswagen drew 150 names out of a hat (probably not literally) to see which employees at its Chemnitz, Dresden, and Zwickau plants would get to drive around in their very own ID.3s.

Sadly, this wasn’t just a morale-boosting giveaway, driving the ID.3s will be work, since the 150 EVs are being tested before they’re sent to customers. The ID.3s will, like those being sent to early customers, do without a few features as VW seeks software fixes.

As the employees drive their company test cars around, though, they will be receiving regular updates. The employee-test-drivers’ feedback will be crucial in letting VW know which changes are good and which aren’t.

“The comprehensive driving profiles in the run-up to the European market launch of the ID.3 are extremely valuable to us and open up further potential for optimization”, said Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for E-mobility. “Added to this is the very personal feedback from our employees. That means our team in Zwickau is not only building the ID.3 to the highest quality standards, it is also actively assisting in the further development of the technology and electric cars.”

Order books for saleable cars are opening in July and deliveries are beginning in September, so VW will have to react quickly to employee feedback.
