Audi Launches A6 Allroad with More Towing Capacity than a Chevy Colorado Share Comments Audi has taken the wraps off the brand new A6 Allroad and (in Europe) it comes complete with a V6 Diesel engine, a modest lift, and the body cladding we all know and love. First introduced in 1999, the A6 Allroad takes the A6 Avant we all know and adds more off-road bits to combine the svelte Avant’s elegance with go-anywhere capability. Audi has lifted this Allroad nearly 2 inches over the standard Avant, which gives it 5.5-inches of ground clearance. Since this is being sold in Europe (more on that later), Europeans will tow with it so Audi has given it real tow-vehicle chops. With a towing capacity of 2.5 metric tons, it can tow more than a base Chevrolet Colorado. Previous ImageNext ImagePreviousNextView Large That towing capacity is helped along by a diesel V6 that makes up to 350 hp and more than 500 lb-ft of torque, which, says Audi, is good enough to get you 62 mph in 5.2 seconds. Power is funneled through an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission and wheel-selective torque control, which should help you find grip off-road. It’s not all for off-roading, though. Since the Allroad is pretty quick to get up to 60—and Audi had some technology lying around—it can also use its brakes to grab the inside wheels when you’re rounding a corner. But let’s be honest, the Allroad is likeliest to be driven along highways, and as such can lower itself at speed to become more aerodynamic, saving you fuel. Further lessening the fuel consumption is Audi’s “mild-hybrid” system that Audi argues improves fuel economy by 0.4 L/100 km (which in the case of the 350 hp engine amounts to about 2.2 mpg) And to help you park this wagon a little easier, Audi has also fitted it with all-wheel steering. The active system means that the back wheels can counter-steer at low speeds—making it turn tighter—or turn in conjunction with the front wheels at high speeds—making it feel even more stable. And all of this starts at 61,500 euros in Germany (for reference, the A7 starts at 59,000 euros in Germany and at $68,000 in the USA). Now, as this is a TDI, don’t expect this exact vehicle to come stateside. Audi USA is still trying to forget dieselgate. But rumors have long held that the A6 Allroad might come to the US with a gas engine and according. Unfortunately, this is anything but a certainty, but Audi USA recently told Car and Driver that a decision hadn’t yet been reached on whether or not to import it. So decide how optimistic you are and take that information for what you will.
