A3 4.0 is Here, Audi Reveals New A3 Sportback

Audi’s latest A3 is here. The fourth-generation Sportback has arrived with a new exterior and a cabin that breaks Audi’s mold, at least a little bit, to give it a hot and premium new look.

The styling’s not exactly a revolution from Audi, but then again, that’s not normally the way the company does things. Evolution is the name, but still, the sharp creases and thin headlights look fresh, modern, and handsome. Plus those roof rails make it look almost wagon-enough for buyers who are saddened by the lack of modern small longroofs.

Inside, the A3 Sportback gets a 10.1-inch MMI display that’s integrated into the center stack, though the vent that pops out of the top of it is an interesting design choice. The system can recognize handwritten letters on the screen as well as natural language. A 12.3-inch digital dash with virtual cockpit is standard and offers three different views.

The new MMI system gets 10 times the computing power of the old, Audi says, and it handles Audi connect with LTE, has a Wi-Fi hotspot, and handles phone connectivity. Six user profiles store climate control, seat position, and even navigation destinations, offering predictive traffic route guidance and satellite imagery and 3D models for major cities. Car-to-X services allow finding empty parking spaces and traffic light communication.

The A3 Sportback launches in Europe with a trio of engines. A 1.5 TFSI with 150 hp is the base, but there is also a 2.0L TDI four with 116 hp and another version with 150 hp. Front-drive comes first, with a six-speed stick or seven-speed auto. More engines, including electrified and quattro options, will follow.

Higher-power A3s get a four-link rear suspension that can also be fitted with adaptive dampers and 0.4-inches of lowering. Suspension settings can be tuned with the Audi drive select system and a sport suspension on S line lowers the car 15 mm.

Driver-assist features include the usual suspects, like pre sense front, swerve assist, and lane departure warnings as well as lane change and lane exit warnings, cross-traffic alerts, and park assist.

Orders for the new A3 Sportback are set to start this month in much of Europe, with deliveries to start in May. Pricing will start from 28,900 euros.
