Audi R8 LMS GT2 Is Audi Sport’s Most Powerful Creation Ever

If you’re reading this site, you are probably well aware of the GT3 and slower GT4 racing class regulations, which are used in popular racing series all over the globe. You may not have heard of the new GT2 regulations, however, which are being put in place by the SRO Motorsports Group.

Cars racing under the GT2 regulations will have more power than GT3 machines, but also less downforce. This means the lap times for the class will fall in between GT3 and GT4, although the cars will be more presentative of the road-going vehicles they are based on.

Audi debuted its first GT2 challenger this week at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed: the Audi R8 LM2 GT2. The German automaker claims the R8 LMS GT2 is the most powerful vehicle in Audi Sport’s 11-year history thanks to its 640 horsepower 5.2-liter V10 engine and claims its suited to both racing drivers and track day enthusiasts alike.

“This sports car with its emotive high-performance V10 engine marks the top end of our customer racing program,” said Audi Sport boss Oliver Hoffman. “The legendary event at Goodwood is the ideal venue for unveiling such a fascinating sports car.”

Prices for the R8 LM2 GT2 will start at 338,000 euros ($381,000 USD). The order books are open now and the first deliveries are set to commence in December.

The only other manufacturer to debut a GT2-spec race car other than Audi is Porsche, which showed off its 911 GT2 RS Clubsport entry earlier this year at the New York Auto Show.
