Watch: Can Tuned RS7 Keep Up with an Aventador?

The question is more interesting than you’d think. That’s largely down to these car’s similarity in the quarter-mile but also to the vast gulf in pricing.

Making 750 hp and 508 lb-ft of torque, the Aventador has the measure of the tuned RS7 when it comes to power (700 hp) but not torque. Thanks to a not insubstantial tune, the RS7 makes nearly 740 lb-ft of the stuff. And as Audi has put it in the past, people shop for horsepower, but they buy torque.

And this may be why. Despite a weight differential of nearly 400 lbs and a power gulf of 50 horses, the RS7 can keep up with the Aventador and, in fact, beats it off the line (when everything is going well).

Mind you, even 240 lb-ft of torque can’t completely overcome the weight and power difference as the Aventador is better at speed and beats the RS7 on, probably, the fairest run of the day.

There’s not much in it, though, and as Host Mat Watson argues, the price difference is about 250,000 pounds—even once you factor in the tune. Maybe a tenth of a second is worth it to you, but I suspect that the tuners of this particular RS7 are feeling pretty darn good about themselves. And the owner doubtless feels pretty pleased, too.
