British Report Claims Mk8 GTI “Cup” Will Make 290 HP and Go 166 MPH

With the Mk8 Golf not expected to arrive until October in Europe–and who knows when in America–we have to sustain ourselves on the scraps and crumbs we can find from around the world. The latest crumb includes a new performance variant that will allegedly fit in between the GTI and the R.

The UK’s Car Magazine explains that the GTI Cup is inspired by Europe’s current GTI TCR (so, even if they’re right, there’s no guarantee it’s state-bound). With an alleged 286 bhp and 273 lb-ft of torque, the new GTI Cup is tipped to be the ultimate performer in the lineup.

If the performance numbers are right, that suggests that the regular GTI’s power levels will be lower than 286 hp. According to Car, the power level will rise to 236 bhp, up six bhp from the current car’s figure (we really need an international standard).

The Golf R, meanwhile, will get more of a bump, according to the report. With 328 bhp on tap, it should be able to get to 60 in just 4.3 seconds and unlike the GTI, we still believe the R will get a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
