How To Film A VW ID R At The Nurburgring

As you probably have already read, VW Motorsport broke the record for electric vehicles at the Nurburgring Nordschleife today, with Romain Dumas and the 680 horsepower VW ID R lapping the 12.9-mile circuit in an incredible 6:05.33.

Such a historic accomplishment is definitely worth documenting in great detail, but how do you film a record-breaking car like ID R at a twisty track like the Nurburgring – even if its running at a relatively slow pace? Thanks to Pistonheads, we now know how VW plans on capturing its electric track beast on camera, and the answer is even more amazing than we could have imagined.

What you’re looking at is a Caterham look-alike sports car called a Westfield, which is powered by a Honda CBR motorcycle engine of unknown specification. The engine is allegedly making around 160 horsepower, which is enough power for the featherweight Westy to outrun most supercars.

The Westfield may not be a real Caterham 7, but it’s just as capable and could keep up with the ID R no problem for high-speed tracking shots. To be honest, the little 7 would give the ID R a decent fight in certain sections of the ‘Ring if it was in the right hands (and didn’t have a massive metal camera rig attached to it).

As impressive and groundbreaking as the fully electric VW ID R may be, we have to admit, we’re a little bit more curious about this camera car. What mad man drives this? Where is the onboard from his lap of the Nurburgring? Now there’s something we’d really like to see.
