Build or Buy: Golf R Showcar

While we are months away from car show season, now’s the time to pick something up and get it ready for the spring. If you’re interested in a MK7 Golf R, we have two great options for you this week. But once again, do you build, or do you buy?

Argument: Buy

If you’re looking for an attention-grabbing car, then turn your peepers to this show-ready Golf R. This all-wheel-drive hatch is loaded with a catalog of aftermarket parts. From the list in the ad, it has almost every APR part available: Stage 3 turbo kit, intercooler, big brake kit, cat-back exhaust, and much more.

Under what we think (read: hope) are vinyl “urban-camo” panels, is the iconic Lapiz Blue paint. This R has custom powder-coated APR 19-inch wheels, and rides on a coilover suspension. The inside is mostly stock, but make sure to take a look at the carbon-fiber steering wheel and giant shift paddles.

Oh yeah, if you are anti-clutch-pedal, this R comes with the two-pedal transmission. It also comes with a steep asking price: $44,990. The ad states it has over $30,000 in improvements. And it only has 20,000 miles, so there’s some justification for the high price.

Take a look at the Platinum Motor Cars ad for all the information. They are located in Chicago, IL.

So to counter a $45,000 custom car, we, of course, tried to find the lowest priced Golf R out there. A quick cars.com search pointed us to this similarly equipped R. And it’s less than half the asking price of the “buy” car.

That’s right, this 2015 R in Deep Black Pearl Metallic paint has an asking price of $19,900. If you have a $45K budget, then this leaves lots of room for upgrades. Why so cheap? To start, it has 87,000 miles. Despite that, the car looks clean and well cared for. And just for reference, it’s $2000 less than another R that has 82,000 miles.

All-in-all, this low-priced R looks to be quite the bargain. And is the perfect platform to build your own show car on. This 2015 Golf R is in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. There’s more information in the ad on their site.
