Build or Buy: Your Own Rad Rocco

Spring’s around the corner: football is now over (hope your team won!), the 365 days of January are over, and the groundhog in Pennsylvania did not see its shadow. Better yet: RADwood started to announce 2020 shows. If you’re in the market for an 80’s or 90’s ride, have we got two options for you. But you have to choose: do you build or buy a Scirocco?

Argument: Build

Well, this is awkward. We had a build car all picked out last night and this morning the ad is gone, so don’t take too long deciding on this one. Fortunately, the members provide. This ’88 ‘Rocco is essentially complete and it ran when parked five years ago, then again three years ago.

The car was member, ydonturada83, who swapped the original 16v engine with the one in it now because it had fewer miles.

The car also comes with a short shifter, upgraded springs, and a modified exhaust. It sits on 16-inch BBS rims and it comes with the original bucket seats and velour inserts. Ydonturada is asking $1,600 for the car.

Argument: Buy(ish)

Ah, the intrigue of a “no reserve” auction. That’s right, this ’88 ‘Rocco goes to the highest bidder, no matter how low their offer.

And what a car they’ll take home. This Alpine White fastback is outfitted with a bunch of period-correct, and RADwood-perfect, enhancements. There’s the still-fresh 15″ Centra wheels, the Euro bumpers, and the white-striped taillights. This car even comes with a Kamei grille, Euro headlights, and MOMO steering wheel. Other modifications include Recaro seats, Techtonics exhaust, and some Neuspeed goodies.

But not all is golden with this little coupe. It’s going to need some body work. There are some missing bits here and there. And the whole car just looks more than a little tired. Hence our “buy(ish)” statement above.

If you’re looking for a car to just drive and enjoy, this is a great option. If you’re looking for a show-winner, well, this one’s going to need some work to get there.
