Build or Buy: Your Topless Summer Share Comments Happy Monday everyone. This week we bring a not-quite-Build-or-Buy article. In the past, we’ve had some “Build or Build” editions of this series where both found examples needed some work, but this week we have two classic Volkswagens in very good shape (one more than the other). So if you’re looking for a summer top-down ride, check out these two convertible Beetles. Argument: Buy Article: 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible Previous ImageNext ImagePreviousNextView Large A funny thing happens when a company announces an icon is going out of production: collectors snatch them up and store them away. And this Diamond Silver Metallic 1979 Super Beetle is just such an example. To start, it only has 378 miles on the odometer. This 42-year old car has been driven less than some cars are driven in the first 42 days off the lot. So get this: the first buyer only drove the car 29 miles before storing it, and the second owner put only 349 miles on it since purchasing it in 2017. In other words, if you ever wanted to know what a brand-new Beetle Convertible looked like, this is as close as you can get. On top of low miles, this car has some nice dealer-installed (and documented) upgrades. It was a woodgrain dash applique, an upgraded cassette stereo, and a glovebox full of Beatles cassettes (get it?). And of course, the car is immaculate. Of course, a low-mile car comes at a price, and that current price is $26,500. You can see more on this ’79 in its bringatrailer.com auction; the photos alone are worth a look. The auction closes in four days, and this striking silver car is in Wenatchee, Washington. This identical car may have more miles, and it might not be as perfect, but it’s awful close. And it’s an awful lot cheaper. For an asking price of $11,600 what you have here is a clean, rust-free, drive-it-home car. And with only 53,000 on the odo, it’s still a low-mile car. Heck, it even has its original tires. If you buy it, please promise to change the tires ASAP; that can’t be safe. Take a look at the classified ad on thesamba.com for more information. This ’79 is in Paw Paw, IL.
