Find of the Day- Group A-Prepped Volkswagen Rallye Golf Share Comments Back in 1990, Volkswagen UK Brand Promotion Manager Nigel Walker was placed in charge of preparing a Rallye Golf for competition in the British Open Rally Championship. He quickly enlisted Former National Rally Champion Allistair Sutherland to contribute his expertise in terms of build and development of the platform. Volkswagen dealer Gilders of Sheffield was placed in charge of engine development, who ran the car beginning at the 1990 Plains National Rally with Sutherland behind the wheel. Thoughout that season, the car’s development continued with Mark Lovell taking over driving duties for two more rallies. Genuine Volkswagen Motorsports parts straight from Germany like a 6-speed dog box and strengthened differentials brought the car closer to Group A specifications, but Volkswagen withdrew support midway through the 1991 season. With no support, the car went into Gilders’ possession where it stayed until 2002. After the car changed hands again in 2011, the motor was rebuilt and remapped, and the fluids and belts were replaced. The car still retains all of its original parts and shell, although it was repainted recently. The Rallye Golf will go on sale at Bonhams at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 27th.
