Forum Friday: Hella Awesome Golf

The Mk8 Golf made its debut yesterday, so it seems fitting to focus on Volkswagen’s most popular car for today’s Forum Friday article. And this ’89 Golf is Hella awesome.

Back in January 2014, VWvortex member vwjunkie42 had an ’89 Golf cross his path and he couldn’t pass it up. This one-owner bunny has air conditioning, power steering, and that’s about it. No radio, no speakers, no door pockets, and not even a tach. This is about as bare-bones as it gets.

Oh, there’s one other thing this Golf came with: rust. Now, it wasn’t a lot of rust, but it ate into the exhaust system and brake lines, so he replaced both. A fresh set of brakes, a lowered suspension, PepperPot wheels with brand new tires, a shiny Massachusetts’ inspection sticker, and vwjunkie’s Golf was back on the road.

The mods started early too. In addition to the wheels and suspension, this white rabbit got red stripes added to the bumpers, a Westy front grille and headlights, a Nardi steering wheel, mucho Hella foglights, and much more. This little Golf goes through a few iterations, including a full respray done entirely in vwjunkie’s home garage. The full restoration and continued updates are impressive. And check out the most recent addition: custom Recaro seats completely reupholstered by the owner.

So if you’re looking for a time-sucking thread, head over to vwjunkie42’s thread in our forums. And take the time to send him some kind words on his work. That would be Hella excellent.
