Forum Friday: The O.G. GLI

When was the last time you saw a MKI Jetta? How about a MKI Jetta GLI? Well, feast your eyes on this rad red sedan in this week’s Forum Friday.

Back in December of 2017, VWvortex member Mkvkyle got himself a neat little Christmas sleigh: a 1984 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. The car came from a local enthusiast, and it looks like it was essentially stock, with the exception of what looks like BBS RA wheels.

Kyle got right to it on his new project and refinished a set of BBS RS wheels he got “for next to nothing.” Next came a new stereo system with completely new speaker wiring. And you can’t run those multi-piece wheels on the stock suspension so in went a full set of ST coilovers.

Other mods include Euro headlights, turn signals, and grille. The ’84 also has Euro bumpers and a MKI Scirocco steering wheel. And there’s a period-correct Pioneer deck in the dash.

Just recently, Kyle picked up a 2.0-liter 16-valve engine and has started pulling it apart and refurbishing it to go in the Jetta. So this is a great thread to watch for future updates.

Enjoy Kyle’s ’84 GLI build thread on this fine Friday. And drop him some words of encouragement too. We look forward to see how his build turns out.
