Forum Friday: R32 DTM Turbo Excellence

It’s Friday, so you know what that means: time to feast your peepers on some goodness from our forums. And this week we have a most-excellent R32. But this isn’t any old R32. Nope; it’s been tweaked and tuned. So if you’ve done enough work for the week, stick it to the man and read through this 8-page build thread.

Back in 2008, VWvortex member Vee’s_2008_R32 picked up a, you guessed it, 2008 Volkswagen R32. For those not in the know, both the MkIV and the MkV R32’s were a Golf cranked to 11. These models (which appear to be rising in value) features 4motion all-wheel-drive, upgraded brakes, upgraded suspension, exterior enhancements, and interior upgrades.

But the most important element of these models was what was under the hood: Volkswagen’s 3.2-liter 250-horsepower narrow-angle V6. This engine made 50 more horsepower than the GTI and rocketed to 60 MPH in about 5.8 seconds. And we have to mention it makes some beautiful noises.

So what about Vee’s R32? You’ll see in his thread what a transformation his ’08 has gone through over the years. He’s stripped the interior, added a roll cage, and suspension upgrades.

But the most impressive enhancement is the HPA DTM Turbo kit. That’s right, this is a turbocharged 3.2L VR6. Now if you’ve ever dreamed of an upgrade like this, Vee’s thread is the one to read; he documents just about the entire installation process.

Have we mentioned Vee’s R32 has 100,000 miles? Yep, he adds a crap ton of power to a worn-in engine. And like any project car, there are periods of work and long periods of downtime. Interestingly, Vee recently got to working on the R again; we look forward to new posts from him.

So check out Vee’s_2008_R32’s thread in our forums, and have a great Friday.
