Ratty Rescue: Ran-When-Parked Pirelli GLI Share Comments Did you like this week’s Find Of The Day? Looking for your own small-bumper Jetta GLI? Want something a little rarer? Check out this Wolfsburg “Pirelli” Edition GLI; it’s a complete car for a low low price. Full disclosure: while I’ve casually read references peppered throughout our forums on “Pirelli Edition” GLIs, I knew next to nothing about them. While I have a MK2 Jetta, I’m not nearly as knowledgeable about them as some other Volkswagen models. But whenever I’m faced with second-gen Golf/Jetta questions, I click my saved shortcut to the A2Resource. The site may be the most thorough collection of information on these little cars on the internet. Perusing the A2Resource was a necessity for this article since, like many of our Ratty Rescue ads, there’s not always much information on the car the person is trying to sell. Like the model year for example. Clicking through the handy Model Year Guide, I quickly found the information I needed. Previous ImageNext ImagePreviousNextView Large In 1986 Volkswagen offered the limited-edition Jetta GLI Wolfsburg Edition. This was no ordinary Wolfie. You see, in 1986 the WE came with a number of enhancements not found on other GLIs. Inside there’s heated grey leather seats and an integrated ski sack behind the rear seat armrest. Outside the car has a standard rear spoiler, Tornado Red or Atlas Grey paint, and power heated mirrors. But the thing the car is most noted for is its standard 14″ Pirelli P-Slot alloy wheels. While enthusiasts call it a “Pirelli Edition” it’s interesting to note Volkswagen never did. Check out a scan of an original dealership brochure. While this 1986 GLI is rough, it’s definitely saveable. The great thing with this particular car is that it appears to be complete. The Pirelli wheels are all present, the rear spoiler is in place, and even the “GLI” dash panel hasn’t been removed. Sure it needs a paint job. Yes, the trim is faded. And the rare grey leather seats have seen better days. But the parts are all there; nothing to search for. Like all cars being engulfed by weeds, the seller says it ran when parked. There are some clutch issues as well. Take a look at the ad on TheSamba.com. This Pirelli Jetta is located in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Current asking price: a mere $1000.
