Volkswagen wants the R brand to go electric, but it doesn’t think it’s quite ready to do that yet. Not according to head of sales Jurgen Stackmann, at least.

Speaking to the UK’s Autocar , the board member said that the future of R is electric, but that it won’t happen next year.

“Today, if you look at high performance and electric, it’s actually a huge compromise, and you pay the penalty with a small range,” Stackmann told the publication . “We should be able to deliver something meaningful in under five years but it takes a team of developers, and it’s tough without a lot of expertise at the moment. We have to start that journey.”

In the meantime, Stackmann told Autocar, Volkswagen might be dipping its toes into the electrified world of performance with a plug-in hybrid version of the Touareg.

That, along with the knowledge gained from the ID.R, should help VW figure out how to make high-performance, AWD EVS before 2024. In the meantime, though, they’ve got their work cut out for them just releasing all the regular EVs they want.
