ROOMZZ at the Top: VW Teases Another Electric SUV Ahead of Shanghai

Volkswagen has given us the first glimpse of its next concept in its electric lineup. The I.D. ROOMZZ is a slightly larger SUV than we’ve seen yet.

The concept will make its debut at the Shanghai Auto show later this month (starting on April 16) and follows in the futuristic tradition of the I.D. family. That said, however, it is perhaps the most recognizably VW electric vehicle yet.

Although it has many of the I.D. family’s design elements—a light up grille, a big cabin, seemingly short overhangs—the front end also bears a striking resemblance to the T-Roc, albeit bigger.

Based on an image of the entire I.D. lineup, it appears that the I.D. ROOMZZ will be a bit bigger than the I.D. Crozz, and just a little smaller than the I.D. BUZZ, making it the second biggest vehicle we’ve seen on the MEB platform.

“The I.D. ROOMZZ1 shows us what we can expect from full-size electric SUVs in the future,” says Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer at the Volkswagen brand. “The puristic look emphasizes the clear function and the user experience is intuitive and natural.”

The interior, says VW, will have completely new seat configurations. Unfortunately, the brand doesn’t go into any more detail than that, so we’re left to guess—chairs on the ceiling, like Emily Carr? Seats sideways like a military Jeep? We’ll have to wait to find out.

VW also wants us to remember that its I.D. cars will be ready to drive autonomously, if and when that becomes a thing. I.D. Pilot will be the name of the driverless driving mode, in case you were curious.

Expect a full report and pictures around mid-April.
