Strong Tiguan and Jetta Sales Boost VW’s Total by 14% in March

The big hitters were hitting it big again in March, as the Jetta, the Tiguan, and the Atlas all helped Volkswagen reach nearly 37,000 total sales for the month. That’s 14% more than it sold in March of 2018.

The Tiguan was the biggest last month, with a total of nearly 12,000 flying off the lot. That’s an impressive 43% better than it performed a year ago, when it was also one of VW’s top sellers.

Volkswagen’s other SUV, the Atlas, also performed well. Selling a total of more than 7,300, the Atlas outsold itself by 22%, as compared to last year.

Even despite the Tiguan’s big sales jump, though, the Jetta was still VW’s most improved nameplate. With a total of more than 9,000 finding a new home in March, its sales improved by 65%.

The Beetle, too, had a good month, with sales of the convertible increasing by 45%, as compared to March 2018. Some of that boost may have to do with the market realizing they don’t have long to buy it. And sales still didn’t top 1,000 units.

Passat sales, meanwhile, fell by 36% while Golf sales dropped by a total of nearly 20%. Again, the GTI leads the pack, though its sales were a less than stellar 23% down, as well.

In all, VW has sold nearly 86,000 vehicles this year and thanks to a strong March, that puts it 2.3% up over the first quarter of last year.

“Record-setting months for Atlas and Tiguan show we’re finding a better balance to meet consumer demand,” says Derek Hatami, executive VP of marketing and aftersales. “Our SUV sales, combined with the success of our new Jetta, lifted us into positive growth for the year. We also had our best-ever month for Certified Pre-Owned sales.”
