Tanner Foust to Return to VW Beetle for 2019 Rallycross Season

Cabot Bigham will join Tanner Foust to fill out Volkswagen and Andretti Rallycross’s second seat for the 2019 America’s Rallycross Championship.

“I can’t express how excited I am to compete in this second season of ARX,” said, Foust. “I am glad that we are back with what I think are the quickest and most capable Beetles ever built. I am proud to be working with Andretti Rallycross again this year to send the Beetle off in epic fashion in its last year of sales.”

The four event season starts in July and runs until October, racing in Madison, Illinois, Quebec, Canada, Austin, Texas, and Lexington, Ohio.

Volkswagen and Andretti Rallycross only announced lately that the Beetle would be returning to rallycross this year. Doubt about the lineup started late last year when ARX champion Scott Speed left the team for Subaru.

Although the fate of the team is settled this year, the future is anything but certain for the team, since the production of the Beetle ends this year. According to VW, no decisions have been reached for what’s to follow.

For the time being, at least, the drivers are excited for the year to come.

“Working with Andretti is going to be massive,” said Bigham. “It’s a huge opportunity for me, specifically because of the amount of power, dedication, and momentum they have amassed throughout the past four years of winning Rallycross races.”

The new teammate won’t have an easy go of it this year, though. Although the Beetles will be essentially unchanged from 2018, Subaru is coming to the series with the newest cars and the most decorated driver in American rallycross’s recent memory.

With only four opportunities to win points, though, Bigham and Foust will at least be able to lean on the team’s experience and familiarity to take the Beetle through to the championship.

“The Beetle is the easiest car to drive out there,” says Foust. “We all suffer from the human condition. Making the car work and be easier to drive is the best way to exact performance out of it.”

The season kicks off on the weekend of July 13-14:

  • July 13-14: Madison, IL — Gateway Motorsports Park
  • August 3-4: Quebec, Canada – Circuit Trois-Rivières
  • September 28: Austin, TX – Circuit of the Americas
  • October 5: Lexington, Ohio — Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
