Ford Alliance On Agenda at July VW Group Board Meeting: Report

Volkswagen Group’s board will be talking about the Ford alliance at its meeting in two weeks, says a new report.

The agreement for VW and Ford to collaborate on vans and pickups that was announced earlier this year could be firmed up at the July board meeting, reports Automotive News. That alliance could extend to shared work on self-driving and electric car tech, according to AN’s sources.

VW declined to comment about the information. The board includes 20 representatives from key shareholders with the company as well as union reps. A Ford spokesperson, AN says, said discussions have been productive and that we’ll get updates as the details become firm.

A VW and Ford partnership will probably include a VW investment into Ford’s autonomous partner Argo AI. And that, AN reports, could be announced as soon as July.

VW CEO Herbert Diess said back in January, when initial plans were laid out, that there will not be equity ties between the two automakers. Instead, the need to cut costs on autonomous and electric development will win out along with the need to increase scale.
